Jefferson Elementary unveils staff lounge makeover thanks to first-grade teacher, Walmart and Crayola

For the new school year, teachers at Jefferson Elementary will enjoy a refreshed space to recharge, thanks to a colleagues’ winning contest entry for the national Walmart and Crayola Teacher Lounge Makeover sweepstakes.
 

How it worked: First-grade teacher Michelle Schreck was notified that her sweepstakes entry for Jefferson Elementary School won and was accepted in the spring of 2026. The refreshed space was unveiled July 29. 
 

• Schreck spent time planning and designing the upgrade, which features new paint, stylish furniture, smart organizational setups, and a brand-new coffee bar.

• To bring the vision to life, two teams of Walmart volunteers spent two days on-site painting walls, assembling furniture, and putting the final touches on the space.
   

By the numbers: The space will make an impact for staff members at the school:

• $4,000: Value of the lounge makeover prize and donated materials.

• $2,500: Additional direct cash grant presented to Jefferson Elementary by Walmart.

• $1,000 in Crayola art and school supplies.

• Two: Days spent by Walmart volunteers helping build, paint and assemble the new lounge space on-site.
   

What they’re saying: “This incredible transformation was a true team effort. Walmart not only funded the project, but they also sent two large teams of volunteers to help bring the design to life,” said principal Mark Hanson. “A heartfelt thank you goes out to Michelle Schreck for her generosity and hard work, and to Walmart for their fantastic support of local educators!”
