Sept. 8: First day of school has a new format and expectations for students in Grades 10-12

A new format for the first day of school for high school students is expanding beyond the traditional ninth-grade students only format to bring expectations for students in Grades 10-12 for all high schools in the Anoka-Hennepin School District. 

What’s changing: While students in grades 10-12 will still begin in person on the second day of school as in the past, students will also be assigned lessons to begin the first phase of their personal learning plans, which are for career and college readiness as well as future planning skills. Students will receive communication from their high school for details before the school year begins. Ninth-grade students will continue to attend school in person on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Why the change: Anoka-Hennepin Schools provide multiple pathways for students to prepare for career and or college readiness following high school. As part of that effort, students will create a Personalized Learning Plan starting in Grade 9 and continuing through their high school experience. 

The schedule: On Sept. 8, incoming freshmen students will be introduced to the Personal Learning Plan process in person, while students in Grades 10-12 will begin their school year and receive information and directions to begin their planning process virtually. Throughout the school year, students will be encouraged to utilize time during late-start Mondays and any unstructured advice time to complete this important work.  

Know the Score: Students will access their PLP through a digital platform called Scoir (pronounced Score) where they will be assigned a variety of career and college readiness activities. The Scoir platform allows for collaboration with parents and guardians in their students' post-secondary education plans, so remain alert for additional information from your student’s school regarding that feature. The Scoir platform is accessed by logging in on the district/school website to the A-HConnect for students and parents/guardians.  

More information: Students will be supported through the Career and College Center at their school with any questions they have. Additional information will be shared throughout the school year in school e-newsletters for parents and guardians and through email communication with students.
